Transient Global Amnesia or TGA is a type of amnesia that involves the sudden and temporary loss of memory of an otherwise healthy individual. When a person suffers from Transient Amnesia, they cannot remember recent incidents and aren’t able to retain any new verbal or visual information either.

Fortunately however, patients generally retain distant as well as immediate memories prior to the occurrence of the amnesia. At the time of TGA, although patients tend to feel confused about their surroundings and the people around them, they are usually clear about their own identities.

During the period of transient amnesia, the patient incessantly asks questions about transpiring events. Common questions asked by transient amnesia patients include, where they are, what is happening around them, who is with them, etc. And even when the questions are answered, they forget what they are told almost immediately and ask the same question again. The period of transient amnesia is different for different people and may last for anywhere from one hour to twenty four hours.

Who is affected by Transient Global Amnesia?

Although there is no inherited or race condition connected to transient amnesia, studies have shown that men are more likely to suffer this form of amnesia as compared to women. TGA affects about 3.4 to 5.2 people for every 100,000, each year in the United States. However, this same ratio rises to 23.5 per 100,000 per year for those older than 50 years of age.

What are the Causes and Symptoms of Transient Global Amnesia?

The exact cause for TGA remains a matter of debate between experts. One of the most widely accepted reasons for transient amnesia is external emotional stress. Examples of such external stresses are sexual intercourse, high anxiety levels, immersion in cold water or rigorous physical exertion. It may also be caused due to a transient ischemic attack or a “mini-stroke” which itself is triggered by a temporary interruption of the flow of blood to the brain. TGA may also be caused by a basilar artillery migraine which in turn is a result of abnormal dilation and constriction of vessel walls.

Treatment for Transient Global Amnesia

If a loved one is diagnosed with TGA, after having ruled out trauma caused to the brain due to some accident, stroke or disease, there’s little else you can do except fix a follow-up appointment with the neurologist. It is also pertinent that activities which create high external emotional stress are avoided at all cost so as to minimize the chance of an attack for the patient.

Apart from all this, the prognosis for TGA is in fact quite positive. This is because the duration of the attacks is for a relatively short period of time and also the effects of transient amnesia are never permanent. However, one must remember that the loss of memory can be a frightening experience for anyone, which is why it’s important for the family of the affected to be especially affectionate, understanding and patient during the period of transient amnesia.

Do you have relentless itchy skin? If so, you may be host to one or more types of skin parasites.

According to the experts there are several things to look for on your body to determine if you may be infected with skin parasites.
• Non healing lesions or sores.
• Fibers or filaments on skin at various non-healing sites where the skin parasites reside. You can see it with the use of a jeweler’s loop and they are also fluorescent under a ultra violet light.
• Cotton-like balls on your body without any reasonable explanation.
• Intense itching skin.
• Stinging or biting.
• Hair loss.
• Chronic fatigue.
• Brain fog.
• Hard nodules under the skin.
• Fibromyalgia or joint swelling and pain.
• Black specs on the skin and bed sheets.
• Presence of tiny strawberry type of spots–look like bright red blood spots just under the skin.

Any three or more of these symptoms are associated with the Morgellons parasite plus a co infection of protozoan and or Lyme disease.

Morgellons is just one of several skin parasites that reek havoc on the skin causing itching and biting symptoms that are relentless. Other parasites that cause some of the same symptoms are:
• Collembola (Spring tails)
• Strongyloides stercoralis—a nematode

Which ones are present is not easily diagnosed. In fact there are no recognized diagnostic procedures for Collembola and Morgellons and most doctors, upon examination of the skin, diagnose the problem as stress, being in your imagination, anxiety, general nervousness, Rosacea’s Red Face, or worse yet that you have acrophobia–enough to drive one away from managing stress to anxiety panic attack.

There is a antibody blood serum test available for Strongyloides stercoralis. A laboratory in Tucker GA, Parasitic Disease Consultants 2177 Flintstone Dr. Suite J, Tucker GA 30084 will perform the test for about $75. The phone number is 770-496-1370. But don’t hold your breadth; even if it’s diagnosed as Strongyloides, doctors are very unfamiliar with its treatment. Whereas they prescribe antibiotics for bacterial infections like candy, they are totally unfamiliar with the use of wormers and may not prescribe the correct one or the right dosage.

And then again, since these parasites weaken one’s immune functioning, other parasites such as collembola may have joined the fray complicating the treatment. In fact, for both Collembola and Morgellons there is no recognized treatment by the CDC–they are just beginning to research Morgellons.

To further complicate matters, usually these parasites are carriers of Lyme, Protozoan and or Toxoplasma gondii (organism often found in cat feces). These organisms further compromise immune functioning complicating the process of any medical treatment.

There are only a few physicians nationally who are aware of Morgellons and Lyme disease. They treat the Lyme disease, protozoan, and the toxoplasma gondii with long term antibiotics, anti fungals, and anti protozoan meds in the hope that as these infections are treated the immune functioning becomes strong enough to free the body of the parasites. To further complicate matters, most diagnostic laboratories test negative for chronic Lyme for many different reasons. Only Bowen Labs in Tarpoon Springs FL thru the use of microscopy at 727-037-9077 is one that I’d recommend.

To date, I haven’t heard of anyone being cured of skin parasites from this approach–it’s more like “keep things from worsening.” As far as the Lyme disease goes, the medical profession has a huge controversy re this long term treatment of Lyme with antibiotics. Alternative therapies using Cat’s Claw, Taurox along with selected vitamins and diet are thought by some experts to be as effective as the long term antibiotics.

Being infected with these parasites is a living hell—perhaps like Job’s experience in the Old Testament of the Holy Bible. But what’s even worse, is that some of these parasites are extremely contagious. One person inadvertently gave them to her sister by exchanging dresses at a wedding; many infected from simply living in the same household; some infected from sitting in an infected chair…

In desperation one generally goes to the internet for solutions which is where one wants to be cautious. Everyone who has had some success with some kind of parasite claims to have some kind of regime for dealing with parasites—some harmless and inexpensive and some as much as $1,600 claiming cure.

Cure is a relative word. Cure after simply a few months exposure can be accomplished with basic diet and some specific inexpensive skin creams. Cure after years of exposure is highly unlikely at today’s level of understanding. After having suffered for approximately two years I discovered a dietary connection. There are foods that feed skin parasites and foods that starve them. The trick is to eat the foods that starve them and avoid the foods that feed them. The diet has kept me symptom free and healthy for fifteen years and yes, I’ve tried everything which is what my e-book entitled Soothing the Itch Within and the Diet to Control It is all about. Through the years dozens of other sufferers have gained benefit from the diet and have become symptom free. And what’s even more valuable in addition to the e-book, there is a regular update available with new information as to what is working and what is not working—we (many subscribers contribute with feedback) keep on top of scams and share products that work and those that are a waste of time. Here is just one of nearly a hundred testimonials. “I’ve also sent your e-mail address to Ginger Savely, my nurse practitioner and foremost Morgellons “RX Doctor” so that she may relay your fantastic e-news to her patients world-wide. Your Parasite-Lyme Diet has helped me immensely.”
Thank you.

Inadequate knowledge about cord blood collection, processing and cord blood storage is pushing many new parents away from donating their babies’ cord blood cells. Hence, comprehensive information on steps of collection, processing and storage of cord blood cells is required to educate them and help them release their fear of unknown risks, if any, involved in the methods. Cord blood collection methods, whether post or pre delivery do not expose the child or the mother to any risk and pain. With all the miraculous therapeutic benefits of cord blood cells, a once disposable umbilical cord is now worthy of being stored to retrieve the diverse life saving opportunities from it.

Types Of Blood Cord Collection Methods

Cord blood storage follows two prior steps:

Collection

ProcessingFirst and foremost is the blood cell collection. There are two methods. Both are considered equally safe. Collection methods vary according to the period of collection –

Ex utero method implies involves placing the placenta in a sterile supporting structure, where the clamped and cut off umbilical cord is injected with a syringe to drain the blood cells in a bag.

In utero (or before the placenta is delivered) method refers to the collection that takes place when the doctor or the midwife is waiting for placenta to be delivered or the period of 5 to 10 minutes before the delivery of placenta. In utero method involves the same procedure, except its time of collection. Both women undergoing vaginal and cesarean deliveries can consider donating umbilical cord blood stem cells, as the methods are safe for both types of deliveries. However, if during the final stages of pregnancy, complications arise, the cord blood bank and the doctors may choose to abandon the plan for cord blood collection. Along with collecting cord blood cells from umbilical vein, mother’s blood gets also collected to detect some infectious diseases as per regulations. Around 40 to 150ml stem cells are drained from the umbilical cords to collect adequate cells for transplantation. The specialists try to collect as cord blood as possible. Incase the blood collected is not sufficient, the blood is still preserved for possible stem cell expansion or if the parents agree, for scientific research. After collection, the blood cells are then forwarded to the cord blood bank facility chosen by the parents. Blood bank centers then test and analyze blood to detect presence of infectious diseases or typecasting the tissues.

Processing Of Cord Blood Cells

After cord blood banking, samples are transferred to the labs within 36 to 48 hours of collection. Different opinions have suggested various ways of processing cord cells. Laboratories that are CLIA certified, at the same time, have registered with FDA test mothers’ blood for diseases like syphilis, hepatitis, HLTV, HIV, Malaria and CMV. The processing part, along with ensuring infectious disease status, ensures that blood cells are eligible to be used for transplanting on family members besides autologous use. A point to note here is that the mother usually has to undergo a special test during cord blood registry to ensure that she is eligible for the cord blood donation. The results are sent to the parents so that they can prepare themselves for treatment if required.

Preservation Of Cord Blood Cells

During processing, cord blood cells are depleted of red blood cells, while some processing methods keep the red blood cells. After processing of cells, comes the next procedure of cord blood preservation. When the unit containing cord blood cells is processed, a cyropreservant is added to it. This is added to make the unit survive the cryogenic process. As the unit drops its temperature to -90 degree Celsius, a liquid nitrogen tank is used for cord blood storage. The units of cord blood are preserved in special bags divided into two compartments. One is for immediate use (if required) and the other is for stem cell expansion.

The child’s parents or guardians are given the rights to unit for their transplanting use in future. Later, at the onset of legal age, the child possesses control over his or her cord blood cells. For those worried about privacy issues, the cord blood banks assure the donors for complete secrecy. At no stage will the donor’s identity be revealed to the recipient, especially if the latter is a stranger.

Molds involve all kinds of microscopic fungi. The growth of a mold can be in
the appearance of a hyphae or multicellular filaments. On the other hand, single
cells microscopic fungi are known as yeasts. It does not create any taxonomic
grouping, and are generally found in the categories of deuteromycota, zygomycota
and ascomycota. However, few of them can lead to diseases or spoiling of food.
Some of them can still be used in the production of various food items, enzymes
and antibiotics or in biodegradation. The life of a mold spore initiates through
a small spore. There are three conditions under which there is a growth of a
mold.

1) Nutrients: food for spores is the organic matter and usually it is
cellulose.

2) Time: a mold growth is generally between 10 days and 24 hours after meeting
of mold growing conditions.

3) Moisture: this is essential to initiate the decaying procedure that is
created by the mold.

Mold spores are both sexual and asexual and some species can even make both
types. These may consist of a single or several nucleuses. The life of a mold
spore can be either in air that is to say that, they can be airborne. They can
bear the excessive range of both pressure and temperature. Thus, mold spores are present everywhere no matter if it is indoor or outdoor.

However, before undertaking a task for cleaning a mold it is necessary to see
that it does not spread to other areas. Each room should be separately cleaned.
One should make sure that no dust is left in the rooms that have been cleaned as
this may spread the molds to other areas.

These molds should then be thrown away in clean bags to prevent spreading of
these molds. The room should then be sprayed with a disinfectant. Another point
that should be kept in mind for preventing molds is to switch on the fan after
cleaning. This will direct the airborne molds outside. During the cleaning
process of molds, if there are any dry molds found, then it is better to first
sprinkle them a bit with water and then clean it. This is because dry molds tend
to become airborne and spread in other rooms. The cleaned areas should then be
treated with soap and then a disinfectant should be sprayed. Once all this is
done, the cleaned area should then be completely dried. But in case moisture is
left in the room then it is dubious to say that one will not have to encounter
any problems relating to mold growth in future.

Non-porous and semi-porous material like wood and plastic bags that have been
cleaned from mold growth can be reused. During the cleaning process of mold
growth, one should avoid much exposure at the time of cleaning as this may be
hazardous for the health of an individual.

Molds consist of all kinds of microscopic fungi that develop in the form of multicellular filaments. These multicellular filaments are called hyphae.

Molds do not appear in the form of a particular phylogenetic or taxonomic grouping but can be found in the form of Ascomycota, Zygomycota and Deuteromycota. The growth of the mold can be useful in the production of numerous antibiotics, foods, enzymes and beverages. However, they can also be harmful to some other eatables.

There are several species of molds such as thermophiles, acquatic species,
opportunistic pathogens and saprotrophs. Molds derive the energy to survive from
the organic matter on which they live and not from photosynthesis. Molds produce
hydrolytic enzymes from the dominant hyphal tips.
These enzymes breakdown compound biopolymers like cellulose and starch into simple
particles which can enter the hyphae. Mold in this way causes decomposition of organic
matter and makes reprocessing of nutrients present in the ecosystem possible. The
development of micoorganisms is restricted by hydrolytic enzymes and mycotoxins
which is produced by molds.

Molds produce through tiny spores. The mold spores may be sexual or asexual;
there are some that produce both kinds. They may consist of many or single
nucleus.

Molds breed on a dead organic substance. However, their presence is only
evident to the unaided eye when mold colonies develop. Some molds can breed at
temperature as low as 20°C. Some circumstances do not encourage growth; molds
can survive in a dormant state.

Black bread mold or Rhizopus stolonifer is a commonly circulated Mucoralean mold. Bread mold grows quickly at a temperature between 15 and 30 degree Celsius. This is an asexual mode spore that is produced within sporangia, which break the spores when they grow up. Rhizopus stolonifer or black bread mold is a heterothallic species where sexual production takes place only when opposite mating kinds come in contact.

Black bread mold has an epidemic distribution. As a result it can cause
opportunistic infections to humans, such as zygomycosis. Usually they breed on
soft fruits, such as peaches and strawberries and bread. A moist bread piece
kept in a humid and enclosed container gathers bread mold within a couple of
days. The bread mold breeds on bread and expand from spores, which float in the
air. The mold spore after it drops onto the moist bread grows by distributing
branching threads. A cell wall and cell membrane consists of many nuclei and
cytoplasm that enclose the threads. The threads develop down into the bread and
manufacture digestive enzymes that will modify the bread into a liquid type.
Growing bread mold soaks up the liquid. Ultimately, a new branching thread goes
down into the bread and spreads the bread mold.

Another kind of mold is Phytophora infestans that causes damage to tomatoes and
potatoes. If a mold spore settles on a leaf of a healthy potato plant in moist
and warm conditions, a new hypha breeds out of it and penetrates the leaf
through a stoma. Then small branches will breed out of the hypha and enter the
walls of the leaf cells with the help of enzymes. The hypha then sucks up
nutrients from the cell filling and develops quickly, disperses throughout the
tissues of the plant. This kind of black mold can parasite can destroy the
entire potato plant. The growth of mold can be prevented by preventing water
clogging and keeping the place dust free.

A person’s ability (or inability) to squat is a good indication of his or her physical condition. One must not only possess a flexible body, but also have well-developed leg and back muscles.

Although human beings are born with the innate ability to squat, a lack of practice in squatting could render a person incapable of squatting, or to maintain the squatting position for more than a minute.

The ability to squat is also important for another reason: health. Contrary to Western ideas about toilet design, human beings were not meant to evacuate waste in the sitting position. The best toileting posture is squatting — the posture used by most Asians, Africans, people living in the Middle East and other regions of the world.

Dr Henry L Bockus, in his book Gastroenterology (Vol 2, pg 469; Philadelphia: W.B. Saunders Co, 1944), explained why squatting is better:

“The ideal posture for (elimination) is the squatting position, with the thighs flexed upon the abdomen. In this way the capacity of the abdominal cavity is greatly diminished and intra-abdominal pressure is increased, thus encouraging expulsion.”

However, as a result of a confluence of several events/factors in history — the mistaken idea that sitting is more dignified and ‘civilized’ than squatting, the invention of sitting toilets, the availability of sewers and indoor plumbing in the mid 19th century (during the Industrial Revolution) — one third of humanity has ended up abandoning the squatting posture.

Today, with few exceptions (eg: France), it is virtually impossible for a visitor to find squat toilets in Western countries.

The habit of sitting for defecation has given rise to a strange defining characteristic of Western peoples: one in three adults (according to one study) is incapable of holding the squatting position for more than thirty seconds.

But there is more to a person’s ability to squat than meets the eye…

To Sit or Squat?

The truth is that human beings were designed to evacuate waste in the squatting position.

In the sitting posture, it is physically impossible to empty the colon completely. The use of sitting toilets has been linked to the growing epidemic of colon, bladder, prostate and pelvic-related health problems in Westernised countries. (More information about this link can be found on this website on toilet-related ailments.)

For those who wants to squat for bowel movements, the first priority would be to regain the ability to squat. The best way is to practice doing squats, as demonstrated in this Expert Village video.

TIP

=================

If you have difficulty in doing a squat, place one or two tall-back

chairs at your side and use your hands to hold on to them for support.

Or you could practice squatting with a big exercise ball placed between your back and a wall.

=================

Aside from squatting, there are also other forms of exercises that can improve flexibility, sense of balance and strength that are effective in helping a person regain the ability to squat.

Yoga

Yoga exercises are especially beneficial in helping a person regain the ability to squat again. The practice of yoga increases natural flexibility of the body, which is crucial in being able to squat correctly. Yoga also strengthens the muscles needed to facilitate the squatting position.

Pilates

Aside from yoga, Pilates can also strengthen your entire body, which can help you to regain the ability to squat.

Ballet

There are also several ballet exercises that are especially effective in developing the ability to squat:

Demi Plies

Hold on to a chair and stand with your feel about hip’s width apart. Keep your back straight and your pelvis tucked under your body. Slowly lower your body, keeping your feel flat on the floor. Hold for a count of ten and slowly stand back up.

Grande Plies

Stand holding onto the chair, back straight, pelvis tucked. Slowly lower yourself. As you lower your body, rise up on your toes and go down as far as you can while keeping your back straight. You can hold there and in several other positions going up or down if you wish. Slowly raise yourself.

Demi and Grande Plies

You can do plies, both grande and demi, from several off the five basic ballet positions:

1) First position is heels together, toes pointed outward.

2) Second position is feet about hip width apart with toes pointed outward.

3) Third position is rarely used.

4) Fourth position is toe to heel in the shape of a seven, either correct or backwards, depending on the lead foot.

5) Fifth position which is toe to outer instep, forming a sort of “T”.

One Last Word

There are few things in life that, with so little effort required on your part, could provide such a profound and positive effect on your health.

By regaining the ability to squat, and then making a simple change in your daily routine — switching from sitting to squatting for bowel movements — you could prolong and greatly improve the quality of your life.

In today’s sports environment, coaches and athletes are always looking for new ways to gain a competitive edge. Biomechanics is the study of the physics of human movement.

If the body is not in a balanced and in a uniform ratio, injuries may occur. Each segment of the body needs to be equally distributed with regards to the muscle mass of each section of the body. If there is a deficiency in one quadrant it will be relying on another and doubling the work load of that particular area. Our bodies with respect to athletics as well in everyday life are made to respond in a push pull or action reaction methodology with regards to Physics, kinetics, and Bio-mechanics.

As an athlete, when you are performing your workouts. You want to maintain and equal amount of established work on all sections of your body. For example: Quadriceps versus Hamstrings. The Quadriceps are a larger muscle groups relying on the push more than the pull and the Hamstring relies more on the pull and push. The majority of your weight sits on this muscle group while the Hamstrings are the opposite reactor or the complement (including the lower extremities of the Gluteus Maximus) in conjunction with the Quadriceps work the forward motion or backward motion. If a defensive back is about to take off at the snap of the ball to defend a wide-receiver he will utilize his Quadriceps, running backwards and then his hamstrings. As soon as he turns to run in forward motion he will utilize his hamstrings more in conjunction with the Quadriceps. If there is are deficient areas either in the Quadriceps or the Hamstring, one will rely more on the other thus causing a breakdown of the weaker muscle Quadrant and causing an injury to occur. In today sports arenas there are a number of athletes who rely on over excessive development of the Quadriceps versus the hamstrings. How many times when watching a sporting event do you hear the announcer say “well T. Jones will not be playing the rest of the game due to a strained Hamstring”. Remember the athletes are out on the field hours before the game. Stretching and working out to prepare for their vigorous activities. You could say it is dehydration that caused it, maybe. More times than not it is an over-developed Quadriceps and an undeveloped Hamstring and Gluteus Maximus area.

Within the last decade. System tools have been developed to analyze the body to determine weaknesses and problematic areas. I was able to see and utilize a system developed by a company in Phoenix, Arizona. Their E-Factor system gave me the proper information that is necessary to balance any athlete to any specific sport with regards to the whole body from the top of the head to the tips of the toes. If I am going to make an evaluation of an athlete with regards to balance, then I am going to utilize one of the tools provided to me that are on the market. It is important to be precise to every degree when analyzing a top flight athlete. One mistake and you could lose your athlete for a very long time. In baseball it is longevity and performance. Keep them off the disable List. It is the same in Football except you have the factors of Physical contact to worry about and most of the injuries in football are more from muscles and knees blowing out then from the physical contact. If football players would concentrate more on balancing their muscles around the crucial parts of their bodies, such as their knees, shoulders, neck, elbows, less injuries would occur. A balanced stress workout is necessary prior to the opening of the pre-season and into the season. You are not restricted to size, just balance your size and find the proper ratios of balance for your specific sport. Tools are important. I utilize the best tool I know for providing me with the data I need to make a proper diagnosis of a well balanced athlete. In professional sports you must protect your investment and make sure that investment last you for a long period of time. I now have that tool. A balanced athlete is a happy athlete because he or she is performing at their best for a long period of time, injury free.

Balance is important to all people not just athletes. A balanced diet, a balanced workout and a balanced body. We hear it everyday. Now let us all listen to what is being said and live a balanced injury free life in sports and in our personal lives.

Have you heard about the benefits of learning how to use finger pulse oximeters at home?

Instead of rushing to your doctor’s office with worries about inadequate oxygenation, you can now quickly and safely check your blood oxygen levels to be sure that oxygen is reaching all parts of your body in a timely manner.

The finger pulse oximeter is a self-contained fingertip pulse oximeter which incorporates the electronics and the sensor into one unit. This pocket size digital pulse oximeter is very compact, and the unit itself is placed on the fingertip as it shines two beams of light through the fingertip to sort out the color of the blood and determine the oxygen saturation level, pulse rate and pulse strength measurements.

This finger pulse oximeter utilizes their uniquely patented algorithms in an extremely handy, pocket size solution that provides accurate SpO2, pulse rate and pulse strength measurements on patients from infants to adults. This digital pulse oximeter provides clinicians with quick, accurate readings of oxygen saturation, pulse rate, and pulse strength assessment. This lightweight device combines the broad functionality of a standalone unit with the flexibility of a hand-held instrument, yet it is compact enough to fit in the palm of your hand. The finger pulse oximeter platform provides exceptional monitoring performance and enables the device to offer unique sensors that address specific clinical challenges. Because it is pocket size, a broader range of patients can be successfully monitored, without significant time lost.

The finger pulse oximeter offers the features of a conventional oximeter in a compact and user friendly configuration that delivers fast and reliable oximetry. It also provides convenience to clinicians in EMS, hospital and clinical environments. The portability of the fingertip pulse oximeters makes them a very popular choice for home use and for medical professionals who are always on the go, providing a cost effective solution for spot-checks and short term monitoring. Superior performance and unparalleled reliability put vital signs within reach anywhere, anytime.

Finger pulse oximeters can be purchased at medical supply shops or some types of pharmacies. They are usually pretty affordable and easy to use. People who have circulatory problems or respiratory disorders may be able to use a fingertip pulse oximeter to check blood oxygen readings and ensure the body is getting enough oxygen.

After purchasing one of many types of finger pulse oximeters, read the guidelines to be sure you know how to use it. Then practice placing it on the finger you will be using for oxygenation monitoring. It may be helpful to write down each reading you take from a digital pulse oximeter. If you have questions or get uncertain readings, you will have that information ready to share with the doctor if the need should arise. A finger pulse oximeter may make the difference between controlled and uncontrolled oxygen levels in your blood.

Early diagnosis can lead to an early cure. Be sure to use finger pulse oximeters correctly if your doctor prescribes one for you. Protect your health and ensure peace of mind when you purchase a finger pulse oximeter for home monitoring. You will be glad that you took this important step in checking your blood levels to be sure you are staying as healthy as possible for as long as possible.

Is food your enemy? Are you sick of feeling guilty after eating one of your favorite foods, just because you get heartburn soon after? Consider this the end of these feelings. While there are many foods that cause heartburn, there are also many ways to prevent heartburn and extinguish the fire from within, before it even starts!

So it’s about 10 minutes after you left a nice restaurant, where you got the best meal in the house. You’re already getting that terrible burning sensation rising up your chest, and thus regretting the meal you just dropped $50.00 on. Heartburn is not fun. Period. However, while it is difficult at times to resist eating your favorite foods, heartburn has a cumulative effect, meaning that by knowing most all of the foods that cause heartburn, you can eliminate the ones you don’t care about as much, and continue to eat your favorites with less risk of heartburn. And so, the filter and resist method is born!

The main goal here is to ease the symptoms of heartburn by eliminating acid production in your stomach and soothing your irritated esophagus and digestive lining. In order to do this you must first filter the foods that cause heartburn that you don’t care about.

The main groups of these fiery foods are:

- Spicy foods

- Coffee and carbonated drinks

- Tomatoes and high-acid citrus fruits

- Pasta

- Starches (especially fried)

- Sugar-filled snacks

- Fried meats

Now, of all these foods types, many of them also cause many other health problems, and you should use your heartburn as an excuse to turn them down. Talk about a blessing in disguise! The main foods to avoid here are fried starches, coffee and carbonated drinks, sugar and fried meats. Some of the others are staples, and cannot be avoided completely.

The above list in not complete by any means, but simply listing 100’s of foods would do you no good. However, this list is a good set to keep in mind, and by filtering out the specific foods that cause heartburn from that list that you don’t enjoy as much that you don’t enjoy as much, you’re well on your way.

Now for the second step: resistance. This is the tough part. Say you love spicy foods, eating chicken wings or drinking coffee. By reducing the number of foods that cause heartburn in your diet, you have already taken care of part of the problem. At this point, you need to reduce the quantity of the foods you did not filter out of your diet. Simply eat less. If you love your cup of coffee in the morning, drink it. But stick with literally one cup, not five, and you’ll typically be fine. If you like wings, eat them on occasion, but get a salad with them to prevent you from eating more than necessary.

Here are some other quick tips for decreasing the chances of heartburn, even after you’ve used the filter and resist method:

1) Eat smaller, more frequent meals (5-6 per day)

2) Never eat within 2 hours of going to sleep

3) Enjoy vegetables, low-acid fruits and whole grains

4) Avoid crunchy, sharp foods like pretzels, chips and hard candy.

5) Don’t drink citrus drinks like orange juice, and others with high acid content.

6) Try peppermint tea with caffeine instead of coffee to soothe your throat.

By following these simple steps to reduce the foods that cause heartburn in your diet, you will be more comfortable and much healthier for life!
